"White sphinx, leaning against snakes of aqua green hills." This is how dadaist artist Raoul Hausmann recalled the narrow streets of Ibiza where he lived from 1933 to 1936.

The Ibiza we know today may have lost much of what Hausmann knew, but this painting we found in a vintage and antiques market in the heart of Mallorca has captured this idyllic atmosphere which enamored so many thinkers and architects, simply by the precision of its brushstrokes. Such esteemed examples of modern architecture such as Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius and the illustrated mind of Walter Benjamin... Each one of them trod the streets and fields of the island admiring the beauty of these simple buildings and how they harmonize with the scenery.

The light which caresses and dazzles the whitewashed walls and the brilliant blue skies melting into the facades of the buildings, the sober strokes almost appear to try and emulate the rustic world of times gone by, stark and slightly primitive.

We do not know who Anne may be, only that her name is signed on the painting. There is no doubt however, that this work intended to lift one's spirits on a grey day and comfort us in our anticipation of brighter days ahead. With this painting we are granted the therapy of observation, and it really works.

This is one of the original finds of SABELLAR and ever since we stumbled across it at a market in the middle of the island one summer it has become the starting point and inspiration for similar products in our collection such as our vintage cotton shirts, embroidered by hand, and our next jute baskets and espadrilles.
